Although the 2009 Hulk is one of my most popular deviations (certainly on dA), it's too random. The lines go nowhere and the shapes are haphazard. These days, I like to have as many of my lines as possible converge in one spot, or be perfectly in line with another part of the image. You could put a ruler against some of the lines in the 2012 version and things would line up.
I like to think it's improvement, but I guess it could be OCD!
See I prefer the original. The shapes are so bold, the head, the forehead, the mouth. It's animalistic both in his expression and in the proportions of the face. The new one is good, but that first one has something raw about it that I think works better.
I get that. The first one is more abstract and less illustrative. I guess my style has evolved away from the starting point a little closer to regular illustration than I intended. It's still difficult for me to look at the original though. The nostrils are literally sections of circles. It looks to me like I didn't care enough to take the shapes beyond Illustrator's default settings!
When doing something that's more cartoony it's actually not that rare to use base shapes. I think you're underestimating yourself and being overly critical.
I guess. I have this obsession with disguising anything which might look like it would give away the origin of the artwork. Like brush strokes, I hate on my own work, yet I look at stuff by Sean Murphy or Dan Panosian and just wonder how I can't let it go!
